Huron Valley Catholic School & Covid-19

The health of our students is extremely important to the faculty and staff of Huron Valley Catholic School. We developed a plan based on three principles:

  • Provide a safe environment for our students, teachers, and staff.
  • Implement practices and protocols aligned with current data and counsel.
  • Maintain our HVCS culture of nurturance and partnership with parents.

As we move through these uncertain times, we will be using this space to keep families up to date on the school’s responses to any new circumstances we find ourselves in during the school year.

FAQ

We gathered the most frequently asked questions we received from families and have compiled them here. We will be adding more FAQs as we receive them.
  • Masks are required for all students in Kindergarten through Grade 8.
  • Increased spacing, sanitation and hygiene practices will help to limit the spread.

What is the plan if a teacher, student, or immediate family member tests positive?

Immediately contact Washtenaw County Health Department (WCHD) for guidance. They will provide specific directions for each individual case.

Will an entire class have to do a mandatory two-week quarantine?

This is a possibility, but decisions will be based on WCHD guidance and who they determine has had exposure.

How will families be notified about exposure?

Families will be notified via email communication that there is a known positive case in a particular grade level. All FERPA and HIPAA laws will be followed in the release of any information.

What about siblings of those in a classroom with a positive case?

This will depend on the circumstances and the guidance of the WCHD.

How will students keep up with classroom instruction if they are in quarantine?

If an individual is required to quarantine, this will be treated as an extended absence, with teachers communicating directly with the student and family.

Will explanations of lessons be recorded and posted to the LMS for these students?

If an entire classroom is required to quarantine, the class will transition to our remote learning plan, using LMS as our primary means of communication. Teachers will use the LMS to post educational material, receive assignment submissions, etc.

Is there anything that would compel HVCS to shut down face to face learning in Phase 4 without a government mandate?

If there were an outbreak within the school and the WCHD provides guidance to shut down , we would move to our Phase 3 Remote Learning Plan.

Is there a plan to use the Learning Management System (LMS) daily to post assignments to get used to using it?

Teachers will be integrating LMS into their classrooms starting the first full week of school

Is the HVCS staff prepared to start the year virtually if we move backward out of Phase 4 for the beginning of the school year?

Yes. HVCS Phase 3 plan will be distributed to families by August 17th.

What are we doing about shared time/specials teachers who also teach in other schools in addition to HVCS?

Specials teachers will all be following the same screening guidelines as classroom teachers, and will be wearing face masks.

What is the plan for teacher subs? Pre-established list? Shift to virtual learning for individual grade levels if no sub is available?

We will use our pre-established substitute teacher list to fill teacher absences throughout the year. Administration and HVCS classroom aides will also be available to be in a classroom if there is a shortage of substitute availability.

How are classrooms going to be set up to allow extra spacing between students and teachers?

Items that may hinder the classroom from allowing students appropriate spacing will be removed from the classroom and stored for access to teachers as needed.

What is the “feasible” distance?

Guidance has been provided to allow students 3 to 6 feet of spacing.

Will there be barriers between desks?

We have purchased a set of sample barriers and are reviewing these for possible use.

The state recommendation is forward facing desks. Is this going to be how all classrooms are set up this year?

All classrooms will be forward facing, with the exception of kindergarten, which will use
tables and barriers.

Are there adjusted schedules for time on the playground and grounds for learning and fun for the various grade levels?

We are coordinating the playground schedule to limit the amount of interaction between classes, following the idea of cohorts. If 2 3 classes are out on the school grounds at one time, they will NOT be allowed to interact with each other.

How will lunch duty be altered this year?

Mr. Smith is going to help manage lunch duty this year. Parent volunteers will still be allowed , but must use the same screening protocols as staff and students . Parents volunteering will meet Mr. Smith outside at the Pre K playground gated entrance.

How many students will be allowed in the restroom at one time?

We are still discussing ways to feasibly limit the number of students in the restroom at one time.

Are drinking fountains going to be shut off?

Drinking fountains will be available to refill water bottles during Phase 4. We encourage families to have students bring a large individual water bottle (20-24 ounces), so it can last through the day.

Who is doing the cleaning every 4 hours that was mentioned in the guidelines? Who is sanitizing the classrooms when students are done at the end of a period or when changing classrooms?

Teachers and students will be cleaning surfaces and touch points. We received additional funding for a school wide aide, who will be responsible for cleaning common areas in the building.

Who is doing the screening at the beginning of the day to start the school year as mentioned in the outlined plan?

3 staff members will be doing screenings at the beginning of the day (1 at each entrance). Additionally, Mr. Smith will be present during drop off each morning to help families as needed.

How will mask usage be enforced among staff and students who have to wear masks per the mandate?

Warning system:
1-Teacher will give student warning.
2-Student will meet with Mr. Smith or Mr. Kotyuk.
3-Parent phone call.

What happens if parents are not completing the daily log on FACTS?

If parents do not complete the daily screening for each child, parents will be notified with a phone call as a reminder that they need to work in partnership with the school to keep all children and staff members safe.

If we choose not to send our kids to school at the beginning of the school year, would we be able to re enroll them in the 2nd Quarter or 2nd Semester if we felt more comfortable at that time?

Yes! We will be flexible with enrollment, but likely only at the quarter or semester.
